shall we play captain's ball during pe period tmr? as it is enrichment week, we do not have pe tmr. therefore, to help the class bond, brindha suggested that we bring our pe attires/orientation shirts/whatever to play capt's ball tmr.

International Frienship Day Celebrations!

NJC is celebrating INternational Friendship Day with Unity among Diversity as the theme.
Our class will represent you house in the inter-house bazaar competition which will take place on 31 March 2008 (Mon), from 11.20am to 2.20pm

We must step up a stall at the bazaar (near the canteen round tables). The stall must feature food/drinks and game from the country assigned to you house. Any cost incurred shall borne by the class. In return, any profits made from the sale of food/drinks can be kept by the class.

Country we are doing: KOREA!

here's for the cinnamon group. (: but huh, the other day we did our presentation then mr han said it the origins and trade routes were incorrect.. so i wont put them up at the moment. i'll go research then put them up. for now, it's the uses and special characteristics. (:

Origin:

Cinnamon originated in Sri Lanka, full stop.

Location & Trade Routes:

1. Southern India
2. China
3. Vietnam
4. Sri Lanka

Uses:

1. Widely used as a medicine to stop vomiting, relieve flatulence, if given with chalk and astringents is useful for diarrheoa and haemorrhage of the womb.
2. According to some studies, cinnamon helps people with metabolic syndrome, which is a cluster of factors, including excessive abdominal fat, high blood sugar and elevated blood pressure.
3. Used in Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine.
4. Also used in Ancient Egypt to help embalm their dead. (It is used to fill up body cavities along with some other spices.)
5. Can also be used in cooking to help enhance flavour.
6. Widely used in sweet recipes such as biscuits, cakes and desserts in today’s world.
7. Cinnamon's Scent Boosts Brain Function.
8. A Traditional Warming Remedy.

Special Characteristics

1. Anti-Clotting Action.
2. Calcium and Fiber Improve Colon Health and Protect Against Heart Disease.
3. Grows best in almost pure sand, requiring only 1 per cent of vegetable substance; it prefers a sheltered place, constant rain, heat and equal temperature
4. Tree grows from 20 to 30 feet high.
5. Leaves, when bruised, smell spicy and have a hot taste.
6. The commercial Cinnamon bark is the dried inner bark of the shoots.

ORIGINS

Pepper is the dried berry of Piper nigrum* that is picked about nine months after flowering. Pepper originated from India and is now grown in are pepper plantations in Thailand, China, Vietnam, Brazil, and Sri Lanka.

USES

black pepper is a good preservative. They can be used in:
• Canning
• Baking
• Pickling
It is also a good seasoning- adding a little can help to alter the taste of the dish by adding flavour.

white pepper is mainly used for appearance, especially in light-colored sauces or foods where dark specks of black pepper would not look good.

TRADE ROUTES

Romans left India with black pepper which they thought was “long pepper”.

3AD, roman trade weaken Arab traders dominated. Took their merchandise to Alexandria and Venetians and dominated the distribution of pepper.

1498 AD Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama arrived in Kerala. Portuguese took over spice trade and they grew pepper at the tropic countries they owned.

Dutch took over the Portuguese in 1663. However, there was some problems and the East India companies broke up and trade is now freely traded!

Study sessions after school during Ass week

Hey all,
I noe most of the posts for the past few days have been about IH, so i thought of adding a lil variation.
So, just to remind everyone, we end sch DAMN EARLY on the Ass week days.
So i was thinking we should have study sessions too clear up any queries you have with ur smarter classmates (namely Jeanette and Felly, hehe) on various subjects.
We need not go Soma's house lah.... neither should we go Jefferson's house. These places are gettin old. And we shouldn't crash Shanker's house as well. I tink staying in sch would be the best option.
This is just a suggestion, if u dun agree with it, jus ignore it.

about nutmeg:

• Seed of an evergreen tree (Myristica fragrance) native to the Molucca Islands (Spice Islands) of Indonesia.

• Cultivated in groves.

• Moist air & light volcanic soil required

• Found in Indonesia & Grenada

origins:

• Nutmegs can be found among 2 of the 7 Banda Islands, part of the Moluccas group (islands of Eastern Indonesia, once known as the Spice Islands).

uses:

Culinary

• Nutmeg and mace are used to flavor bakery, meat and fish dishes, sauces and vegetables, and in preserving and pickling.

Medicinal

• In the Hindu Pharmaceutical it claims to treat fever, asthma and heart disease. Arabs have used it for digestive disorders, kidney disease and lymphatic ailments.

Other Uses

• Used in perfumery, soaps and shampoos. Nutmeg seed oil, which consists of pinene and camphene, is used in perfume.

special characteristics

• Has a protective layer around it, an arillus, which can be dried and sold as mace (another spice/herb).

• When taken in large amounts, nutmegs has the same chemical equivalent as ecstasy, a drug!

• Pregnant women should not take a significant amount of nutmeg as it is an abortifacient (A substance or device that causes abortion), induces labour.

• Nutmeg was traded by Arabs during the Middle Ages in the profitable Indian Ocean trade

• Network of sea lanes connecting Europe, India and Eastern Asia for over 2,000 years.

hey... u noe for the clove group right? we did it on plastic boards (which are in school) and not on powerpoint, and we didnt exact compile all our info. so, we only have our own parts. Here's the special characteristics
Special characteristics

• flower buds are at first of a light colour. After a while, they become green, then bright red (which means they are ready for collection)
• in the past, was used to perfume the breath during audiences with the emperor
• used as aromas
• name was most likely to originate from its Latin name "clavus", which means nail, as the clove has the shape of a nail
• harvested when it is of 1.5 to 2 cm long
• has 4 unopened petals that resemble the shape of a ball at the top of the clove
